Introduction

The known world fauna of Dolichopodidae is very extensive, with

about 6000 species and 180 genera. These mostly predatory flies are

distributed all over the world including tropics and high-latitude

islands. Many regional catalogs of Dolichopodidae faunas were

published within recent decades, such as lists for the following

zoogeographical regions: Nearctic (Foote, Coulson, Robinson, 1965);

Palearctic (Grichanov, Negrobov, 1979; Negrobov, 1991); Neotropics

(Robinson, 1970, 1975); Afrotropics (Dyte & Smith, 1980); Orient

(Dyte, 1975); Australasia and Oceania (Bickel & Dyte, 1989; Bickel,

1992, 1994). Catalogs of fossil dolichopodid flies was published by

Keilbach (1982), Spahr (1985), and Evenhuis (1994). Now they need

synthesis, supplements, and unification. This paper is the first

effort to compile a world database to genera for one of the largest

dipteran family.

An alphabetical list of 359 generic names in the family

Dolichopodidae (Diptera) is compiled. Valid, invalid, and suppressed

names, nomina dubia, nuda et oblita are included. Ten following

authors gave about 200 generic names: Parent (38), Loew (32), Becker

(26), Bigot (27), Bickel (20), Mik (19), Aldrich (15), Robinson (14),

Rondani (12) and Dyte (10).

A few genera from other families [e.g., Musca Linne (Muscidae),

Nemotelus Geoffroy (Stratiomyidae), Scatophaga Meigen (Scatophagidae),

Sciara Meigen (Sciaridae)] temporarily kept some dolichopodid species.

Archichrysotus Negrobov was incorrectly transferred from Empididae

(Spahr, 1985). For references see above-mentioned regional catalogs

and recent volumes of Zoological Record. I would appreciate any

correction and supplement to this list.
